The Dream

First, let me preface this tale by sharing that this tale may have been inspired by a book. Since Covid hit, I haven’t been able to sleep without an audiobook on to shut my internal thoughts down, so there is that possible outside influence.

Also, be prepared because this is a stressed out brain dump that I had to get out there to help process it. It’s been 5 or 6 days since this happened and darned if I can let the tension go, so here is the raw ramblings of a 3:30 wake-up I had last week. … oh yeah… I need to be writing more so it is in story form… somewhat…

Overhead, the sun lit a field of cars parked neatly in curved rows next to a row of shops, and along a riverbank. There was a sense of peace and comfort as the shops felt homey when you drove past them to park, and the activity was not exactly that of a lazy afternoon, but it was not a rushed, or crowded, setting either.

The dream starts as I walked along the side of the last shop, headed toward my sister’s car parked near the end of the closest row. I had an errand to run that would be an easy ten minute adventure, and then I would bring the car back and go on my merry way.

The lock disengaged when I hit the button on the fob, and opening the door, I stooped to toss my wallet in. Before I could bend to sit down though, I heard a commotin coming from the corner in front of me. A man was dragging a woman toward a car on the next aisle. Her struggles were going unheeded by others, though this feels like it was due to timing and not negligence.

I hollered and drew the man’s attention to me which only seemed to redouble his efforts to pull her along. He had reached his car by this time and opened the door. I all but flew into the car, started it and pulled out driving toward him. I hadn’t even taken the time to close my door, I was so determined to stop him.

The car gave a lurch as I slammed on the brakes behind his car. Seeing that he had no way to back out and escape, he pulled the woman toward a bridge that crossed the river to the other side where another set of shops, and a walking path lined with trees were. Instead of trying to run after them, I pulled the car closer to the bridge and parked, and screamed at the top of my lungs as I did. It was only about 30 feet across, so he was making a faster getaway with her than I had hoped.

Fortunately my scream carried. A couple had bumped into the woman as they had reached the first shop on the other side, shaking his grasp loose. A moment later another gentleman came out of a shop a few doors down. He was closest to the man, and seeing him walk out, I pointed past him toward the assailant. Without hesitation, he took in the scene and disappeared into the trees chasing the man.

That’s where it ended. I can still see that setting. The mountain that was in front of the parking space across the river in front of our original parking spots. The row of homes that had been rejuvenated and turned into businesses, and the … I think they were cottonwood trees, that lined the path on the far side.

I still feel that sense of intense fear for the woman as she struggled to get free. I remember it all very vividly.

I even remember that when I pointed at the bad guy (great detail, right?), I used my right arm to point at him.

I’m a lefty. That doesn’t resonate with an instinctive reaction that would be mine. Question then is, did I tune into something? Did I create another plot line I need to use? Did I just want to freak myself out for some reason? What? My luck it is just another moment where my overactive brain found a way to worry and here we are.

At any rate, all I know is that my blood pressure still has not evened out and this may be in a book someday. Whew… that is not the ride I’d like to try again…

Thoughts?

Good morning, goodnight wherever you are.

Kath
