This weekend I dealt with a cold so going anywhere was not even remotely interesting, and the idea of chilling with a Netflix binge was all I could consider beyond my critters.
Now you need to understand that while I love watching shows, I despise 3 little words and have since I was a young teenager. No not those three. The ‘to be continued’ stuff that has routinely ruined my peace of mind for decades. Those words, combined with an innate ability to tune into foreshadowing on episode 2 for an event that doesn’t occur until episode 10, have led me down some rather stressed out and frustrated moments.
Of course I COULD choose not to watch movies. No TV shows. No reading books… wait.. that one is going too far… but you get the idea. However, I do believe that we can find better ways to keep people coming back.
Will the characters find the treasure?
Will the family move to a new island, city, or state?
Will the enemies become frenemies?
See? I didn’t pose that we attempt to kill off a character and leave the audience hanging for months! Writers can do it! …Wait… Did Dallas destroy the peace when they left us waiting to see if JR Ewing would survive? Grrr….! (If you’re under 50 you may not get this reference.)
Simply put…
It. Is. Not. Necessary. To. Cause. Insomnia! Panic attacks can be limited. Resolution can be achieved before the season ends while creating a new plot opportunity to draw the audience in for the next run of the show. The audience deserves the ability to sleep while still looking forward to the new season of a favorite show!
Audience Members Unite! We must demand peace of mind in the in-between!! We must not go coo coo for Cocoa Puffs over a story!!! Great characters are our friends. Why can’t they just live a jolly life in the summer/winter… off season – months?
I have more thoughts but they are from the teacher’s perspective and I want to leave you lovely souls with one concept… if you consider this one… to ponder, rather than more. So with that, I will bid you adieu while I sort out my continued annoyed, frustrated, confused, ‘gonna-wring-the-writer’s-neck’ attitude.
I hope you are well.
Good morning, goodnight wherever you are!
